The team of specialists at The ORTHOPAEDICS INTERNATIONAL Specialist Group has been serving the orthopaedic needs of the community since 1993. At our new clinics and under our new practice name, we will continue to provide comprehensive orthopaedic care to our patients from diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation. Whether you have an athletic injury, painful arthritis or need a joint replacement, we will help our patients return to their active lifestyle as quickly as possible.

Our team will partner our patients to ensure the best possible outcome from medical or surgical intervention to education and rehabilitation. The practice at Orthopaedics International can be divided into 3 main services.

Sports Service

An integrated service provided by Orthopaedics International and Sports Medicine International with an experienced team of 3 sports surgeons and 1 sports physician.

We know that whether you are a weekend warrior, a professional athlete, a gym enthusiast, or a keen dancer, injuries do happen. Playing or exercising through pain or injury may make for a great story but it can lead to further injury and delay your return to activity.

The knee is the body's largest joint and the source of the most orthopaedic problems. Ligament and meniscus injuries during sports lead patients to seek treatment for pain and instability of the knee joint.

The foot and ankle, with more than 180 bones, joints, ligaments and muscles, is one of the body's most complex systems and even a minor problem can affect the functionality of the entire body.

The shoulder moves more than any joint in the body and is a marvel because of its structure and complexity. However, it is precisely its high mobility and complex biomechanics that renders it prone to injury in activities such as swimming, and sports which involve rackets, throwing and physical contact.

Many injuries occur from repetitive use and manifest as a niggling pain which never seems to go away. The understanding of the biomechanical and tissue-level causes of these overuse problems is fundamental to providing solutions for them.

The specialists on our Sports Service team have particular interest, or have undergone additional sub-specialty training in these areas. From evaluation to therapeutic options, from conservative approaches such as ESWT and PRP to arthroscopic surgery, repairs and reconstructions, we are up-to-date on the latest treatments, and surgical advancements for conditions affecting the shoulder, hip, knee and ankle/foot. We aim to return our patients to their activity as soon as possible, with as little risk of injury recurrence as possible.

Hip & Knee Replacement
A special-focus service of Orthopaedics International

As the main weight-bearing joints in the lower limb, our hips and knees are subject to forces of impact during walking and running every day of our lives. It is no wonder that they have the highest incidences of osteoarthritis (wear and tear).

Often, pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis can be treated initially with medication, physiotherapy, and various injections into the knee. In some situations, surgeries such as arthroscopy or osteotomy may be performed.

However, in severe cases, joint replacement is required. Hip and knee replacements are miracles of modern medicine, and often are the best solution for the pain, stiffness or lack of mobility caused by arthritis or injury. Over the decades, joint replacement has advanced in leaps and bounds, with many advances in surgical technique, computer navigation, new implant design and material available.

Our team of experienced joint surgeons will discuss with all potential patients their functional needs and expectations. Using the latest techniques and technology, we aim for the least invasive procedure with the most positive outcome possible for our patients.

Spine Service

An integrated service provided by Orthopaedics International and Neurosurgery International, run by 3 fully trained specialist spine surgeons (2 orthopaedic surgeons and 1 neurosurgeon).

Problems of the low back and neck are extremely common, with the most frequent causes being posture-related, accident related (eg. Whiplash), congenital, or a result of wear-and-tear.

While many sufferers can be adequately treated by conservative means such as physiotherapy and medication, with proper attention to posture, conditioning and ergonomics, the more severe or resistant cases may require more careful evaluation by a spinal expert, and a more aggressive treatment approach.

There have been many advances in spinal surgical techniques over the years, such that it is now virtually a distinct sub-specialised area within orthopaedics and neurosurgery.

Where in the past, almost any spinal operation was regarded as a major surgery leaving behind a large scar, we can now provide treatments for conditions such as neck pain, back pain, and whiplash injuries using minimally invasive techniques such as radiofrequency neurotomy, vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty. We also provide disc replacement surgery for degenerate and prolapsed discs, while our management of scoliosis range from the use of braces, to corrective surgeries.

Our spine service is located in all 3 main hospitals (Gleneagles, Mt. Elizabeth and Mt. Alvernia) with one spine surgeon in every clinic every day. With the combined expertise of our team, we are able to offer a complete range of solutions for the entire spine from the neck to the coccyx (tail bone). Our team of surgeons also works closely with selected physiotherapists in order to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care. We aim to provide the most positive outcome possible, for every patient we treat.

Other services

As an orthopaedic group, we also provide orthopaedic trauma care for patients with fractures and injuries to the muscle and ligaments. Children are not just small or young adults; they often have problems peculiar to their growing years and will be well cared for by our paediatric orthopaedic surgeon.

Treatment of osteoporosis and orthopaedic tumour surgery complete the comprehensive orthopaedic capabilities of Orthopaedic International.
