Biographical Summary
Academic Background:
- Recipient of the PSC Local Merit Bursary Award in 1979.
- Graduated with MBBS from the National University of Singapore in 1984.
Advanced Studies:
- Obtained a Masters in Sports Science (Sports Medicine) from the United States Sports Academy in 1988, graduating as the top student.
- Fellow of the Academy of Medicine (FAMS – Sports Medicine)
Professional Experience:
- Worked in the Rehabilitation Medicine Department at Singapore General Hospital, leading its obesity and cardiac rehabilitation programs.
- Joined the Singapore Sports Council’s Sports Medicine and Research Centre in 1991. Left as its deputy director for private practice in 2005
- Served as Chief Medical Officer for Team Singapore at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games and as team physician for various regional and Commonwealth Games.
Innovations:
- Pioneered the use of point-of care musculoskeletal ultrasound for sports injury evaluation and imaging-guided treatments in 1997
- Pioneered the use of ESWT for soft tissue and bone in Singapore in 1998, and is currently the only ISMST Certified instructor in Singapore. Received overall “Best Presentation” award at ISMST Congress 2023 in Korea.
- Became the first sports physician in Singapore to use Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for treating sports injuries in 2007. He is currently recognised regionally and internationally as a leading clinician in this field, having been invited to lecture on the subject within Asia, Europe, America and Australia.

- Past Chairman and Current Member of Sports Medicine Subspeciality Training Committee, MOH, and Chief examiner for several exit exams.
- Member of advisory board of the Nanyang Technological University’s Graduate Diploma in Sports Medicine.
- Past President of the Sports Medicine Association (Singapore) for two terms.
- Chairman, National Anti-Doping Advisory Board (Received Public Service Medal – Bronze, in 2020)
- Chairman, South-East Asia Regional Anti-Doping Organisation (SEARADO)
